English As An Additional Language
Each school in our division welcomes and offers support for learners of English as an Additional Language (EAL). Depending upon student needs and numbers, our schools offer a variety of supports in English as an Additional Language programming while ensuring that each child develops a sense of belonging within the school community. When EAL students arrive, families are welcomed with an Intake Assessment which includes a gathering of background information as well as a series of assessments that allow our schools to determine the student’s English Language Proficiency Level within the Alberta Education EAL Benchmarks. Based on this initial assessment, a program is created and implemented to support the student’s further development of English Language Proficiency.
We strive to provide an inclusive learning environment for all students, and each school offers a range of programming options which may include small group pull-out, in-class supports, or courses designed specifically for learners of English as an Additional Language (EAL). These supports are intended to help students achieve academic success in all subject areas as they learn the English language.
