Labour Action Updates - Classes resume Wednesday, Oct. 29
October 27, 2025
Schools across the province will re-open for students on Wednesday, October 29, as legislated by the provincial government. A letter from the Honourable Premier Danielle Smith has been provided to Alberta’s parents regarding the introduction of Bill 2: Back to School Act. CTR will share further information with parents as more resumption details become available.
Premier Smith Letter to Parents
While we understand that Legislation is not yet complete, school divisions were asked to send the Premier’s letter to parents to assist in their preparations.
October 6, 2025 - Afternoon
Today, we have received notice that the Teacher’s Employer Bargaining Association (TEBA) has served the Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA) with a lockout notice in response to the provincial teachers’ strike. The lockout will take effect on October 9, 2025 at 1:00 pm. TEBA has also shared their desire to continue negotiations and bring this labour disruption to a prompt conclusion and allow students return to their classrooms.
Schools are closed to students now and, should no further provincial resolution occur, schools will continue to be closed during the lockout period. This is a difficult situation, and we recognize the impact it has on families. While daily classroom instruction has ceased, our support staff will remain working in our schools, engaging in important tasks and professional learning. As such, should you or your children require access to the schools to retrieve a forgotten item of importance, these arrangements can be made by calling the school’s front office staff.
As a Catholic community, we continue to pray for the well-being of all of our students, families, and staff during this challenging time.
We remain committed to providing you with timely updates through our website.
October 6, 2025 - Morning
The Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA), representing teachers and teacher leaders across Alberta including Christ The Redeemer (CTR) Catholic Schools, is currently on strike, effective Monday, October 6, 2025.
What this means for families:
- All K-12 classes are cancelled. Please do not send your K-12 children to school.
- Transportation services will not operate. Please do not leave your child at a bus stop.
Additional information:
- Little Flower Pre-Kindergarten and Before and After School programming are managed by external providers and are not impacted. Please contact these providers with any further questions.
- Additional options for families are available on the Alberta government website at https://www.alberta.ca/parent-supports-during-school-closure
Our prayers are with all students, families, and staff during this uncertain time. We continue to trust in God’s care and hope that the Teachers’ Employer Bargaining Association (TEBA) and ATA will reach a fair resolution that prioritizes the well-being and learning of every student.
Please continue to visit our website for updates.

In response to the impending October 6, 2025 labour action by the Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA), the Alberta government announced two new initiatives to support students and parents.
Parent Payment
To help ease the extra costs families may face while children are home during labour action, the Alberta government is introducing a parent payment program. This support will be available to parents and guardians of students aged 12 and under who attend a public, separate or francophone school affected by the disruption. Eligible parents and guardians would receive approximately $150 per child for each week of labour action. The payments will be made monthly, commencing October 31 and will be retroactive to October 6. Applications will be available through the Alberta.ca platform. Further details, including an instructional video on the parent support payment, will be coming soon.
Parent Toolkit
To give families flexibility during the labour disruption, Alberta Education and Childcare has created a free toolkit that parents can use to help support their child’s independent learning when schools close. The toolkit provides weekly resources that follow the K to 12 curriculum. Resources are available in English, French and French Immersion. The toolkit includes materials for two weeks of learning. Additional weeks of learning materials will be added as needed. Download the toolkits at new.learnalberta.ca.

This evening, the results of the teacher vote of the tentative collective agreement between the Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA) and the Teachers’ Employer Bargaining Association (TEBA) teachers across Alberta were released. Teachers across the province voted against the agreement and are very likely to engage in a strike starting on Monday, October 6.
We will be working closely with school leaders to prepare for this disruption. At this time, parents should anticipate that Christ The Redeemer (CTR) Catholic Schools will be closed to students during the strike unless an agreement is reached before October 6, which appears unlikely at this point. We strongly encourage parents to make childcare arrangements beginning on October 6 as schools will not be open during teacher strike action.
Please note that Little Flower Pre-Kindergarten and Before and After School programming are managed by external providers and are not impacted. We have been informed that they will continue offering programming during any labour disruption. Families are encouraged to contact these providers directly with questions.
Should any further information be provided to us that changes the course of action toward a strike, this will be shared with parents in a timely manner. Updates will also continue to be posted here.
As a Catholic community, we continue to pray for the well-being of our students, families, and staff during this time of uncertainty.

A tentative agreement has now been reached between the ATA and the Teachers’ Employer Bargaining Association. This is an encouraging step forward that provides hope for a resolution without disruption to classes. At this time, schools will remain open and continue to operate as normal.
It is important to note, however, that the ATA’s strike notice remains in effect until the agreement is finalized. Until finalized, the possibility of a strike beginning on October 6 remains.
- If ATA members and TEBA vote in favour, there will be no strike and no disruption to teaching and learning.
- If ATA members or TEBA vote against the agreement, the strike notice remains in place and the strike will begin Monday, October 6.
Our Division also respects the collective bargaining process, and we remain hopeful that an agreement can be reached without disruption to teaching and learning.
CTR will continue to provide updates, including any changes to school operations or supports, as further details become available. Updates will also continue to be posted here.
As a Catholic community, we continue to pray for the well-being of our students, families, and staff during this time of uncertainty.

Today (Sept. 12) the Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA) filed their legal strike notice with the Alberta Labour Relations Board, beginning on October 6, 2025. The ATA did not clarify the nature of the potential strike. The ATA has also expressed their desire to continue negotiating the terms of a collective agreement.
The Government of Alberta has stated it is committed to reaching a fair settlement and directing resources to classroom supports. Negotiations between the ATA and the Teachers’ Employer Bargaining Association (TEBA) are set to resume next week. Should a negotiated settlement be reached before October 6, the teacher strike may not occur.
At this time, instruction and activities occurring within CTR Catholic schools continues. However, given the provincial ATA’s filing of the strike notice, parents may wish to consider seeking childcare for their children starting October 6. Little Flower Pre-Kindergarten and Before and After School programming are managed by external providers and are not impacted. We have been informed that they will continue offering programming during any labour disruption. Please contact these providers with further questions.

Today (Sept. 10) the Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA) announced that teachers will begin strike action on Monday, October 6, 2025, if a settlement is not reached before that date. The ATA did not clarify the nature of the potential strike.
Negotiations between the ATA and the Teachers’ Employer Bargaining Association (TEBA) are set to resume. The Government of Alberta has stated it is committed to reaching a fair settlement and directing resources to classroom supports.
The ATA’s statement does not constitute legal strike notice and the TEBA has not received legal strike notice.
At this time, no changes are in place for CTR Catholic schools. We will continue to provide updates to families as new information becomes available.

Last week, CTR administrators, teachers and staff welcomed students into their schools and classrooms to start the school year and our Board of Trustees and Senior Administration are grateful for the care and effort that went into making these first few days of school memorable and joyful for our students.
Mediated provincial labour negotiations continued last week and did not end in an agreement. The provincial Teacher Employee’s Bargaining Association (TEBA) applied to the Alberta Labour Relations Board for a lockout, which the Alberta Labour Relations Board has accepted. This authority was sought in response to the ATA’s strike vote. No lockout can take place until at least 72 hours notice is given to the provincial union.
In June, the ATA reported that 94.5% of its members voted in favour of strike action. If the ATA decides to commence labour action that would have an impact during the school day, the union must provide school boards with 72 hours’ notice. The ATA has 120 days to commence labour action, unless a resolution is reached between TEBA and the ATA.
Both the provincial ATA and TEBA have stated that they hope to continue negotiations to find a solution.
Bargaining between TEBA and the ATA occurs centrally at the provincial level. This means that items such as teacher salaries are set through the provincial collective agreement, not through individual school boards. The Board of Trustees and Senior Administration of CTR value the contributions of all employees who support student success and we respect the provincial bargaining process.
We recognize that labour negotiations will surface questions and concerns. CTR remains committed to providing timely updates to our staff, parents and communities should any changes to school instruction or operations arise.
In times of uncertainty, we place our prayers and trust in God’s guidance and remain united in our shared mission to serve our students and one another with compassion, understanding, and hope.
August 29, 2025
Our school year has begun and classes will continue after the long weekend. We look forward to continuing to provide welcoming and strong learning experiences throughout all of our communities as we start a new school year.
Teacher collective bargaining is currently taking place at the provincial level through the Teacher Employer Bargaining Association (TEBA) and the Alberta Teachers’ Association, with a mediator working to help the parties reach a settlement during the week of August 25. This is not a local issue between our Board of Trustees and the local ATA, but part of a province-wide process.
As a Catholic school division, Christ The Redeemer’s priority remains caring for our students, families, and staff, and ensuring a smooth start to the school year. Should any changes arise, we are committed to open and timely communication with our entire community, including parents, teachers, and staff.
This section of our website will be dedicated to providing updates as they become available.

The Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA), which represents teachers and school administrators across the province, announced the results of a strike vote in favour of potential strike action. This vote is part of the ongoing provincial bargaining process and does not mean with certainty that a strike or other labour action will occur.
The ATA has 120 days to initiate strike action and must give 72 hours’ notice prior to any job action. This means teachers across the province could potentially be on strike with three days’ notice, should that step be taken.
At this time, there is no impact on student learning. All Christ The Redeemer (CTR) Catholic School sites are open and continue to provide all regularly scheduled programming and events.
While CTR is respectful of the bargaining process and is hopeful for a positive resolution, this remains between the provincial ATA and the provincial government. Should any changes to school instruction or operations arise, CTR will continue to provide updates to staff and parents/guardians through emails and updates to this page.
We recognize that this may raise questions and concerns. In times of uncertainty, we place our prayers and trust in God’s guidance and remain united in our shared mission to serve our students and one another with compassion, understanding, and hope.
